The Architect of the Code

Sahl at-Tustari (203-283/818-896) was an early "Islamic" mystic who was born in Tustar, Persia and died in Basrah, he is credited with many fundamental Sufi intellectual formulations of doctrine and an analysis of the steps in the movement of metanoia, repentance or turning to God (tawbah), and devotion.

Highly unorthodox, he was one of the teachers of al-Hallaj. Sahl at-Tustari explained, or invented, the famous Sufi saying ascribed to the Prophet: "I am He and He is I, save that I am I, and He is He" (ana huwa, wa huwa ana, ghayra an ana ana, wa huwa huwa) as "a mystery of union or realization" at the center of the Saint's personality, called the sirr ("the secret"), or the heart, where existence joins Being. Sahl at-Tustari said: "God is [only] known by the union of contraries attributed to Him."
